Another Old Friend Passed

In the course of working on the two previous posts regarding the passing of some of our classmates, I found that we were unaware that Danny Myers had passed away in 2020. So sorry that our marking his passing is belated.

Danny Myers Obituary

Danny Myers passed away on October 24, 2020 at his home in Schertz, Texas. He was born on March 26, 1945 in San Antonio, Texas to parents, Alva and Lucille (Baxter) Myers.

Danny graduated from high school and attended two years of college before enlisting in the United States Marine Corp. He served two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter crew chief and earned 22 air medals during his four year of active service and two year in the reserves. While serving in the Marine’s, he married his wife Carolyn of 52 years and after his honorable discharge he pursed a career in residential and commercial construction for over 30 years. He enjoyed golfing with his sons, fishing, and gardening with his wife.

Danny was preceded in death by his parents, Alva Mitchell and Lucille Baxter; his sister, Joyce and brother, Micthell. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; their sons, Curtis Wade and Russell Wayne and the families, Rebecca Marie and Jennifer Lynn; grandchildren, Bryanna Victoria, Jade Marie, Camden Luke, Nicholas Gunner, and Jacob Ryder.

A Funeral Mass was held on Friday, October 30, 2020 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church of Schertz, Texas.

Larry Neil Fritz

We lost yet another classmate when Larry Fritz passed away on February 1, 2022.

Larry Neil Fritz was born on February 14, 1946 in San Antonio, Texas to Louis and Nelda Fritz. He grew up on the Southside of San Antonio and graduated from Harlandale High School in 1963. After High School he attended San Antonio College but was drafted by the U.S. Army for service during the Vietnam War. In 1968 after he was discharged he returned to San Antonio and continued his education at the University of Texas Austin, graduating with his Bachelors of Architecture in 1972.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Susan Goerke Fritz, his sons, Shane Christopher (Amy Strong Fritz) of New Braunfels and Aaron Kyle of Austin, his mother, Nelda Oehler Fritz of San Antonio, his sister, Louise Fritz Thompson (Don Thompson) of Baton Rouge.

Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday February 9, 2022 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Marion, Texas.

Passing of Lloyd Ray Helmke

We learned this week of the passing of another of our 1963 Harlandale High School classmates, Lloyd Helmke.

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that our beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor Lloyd Ray Helmke entered eternal rest on November 3, 2021, at the age of 76. Lloyd was born in San Antonio, Texas to Alfred Helmke, Sr., and Barbara Falor Helmke. Two years after high school Lloyd joined and served in U.S. Army National Guard. Lloyd retired from City Public Service of 35 years, enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time with his six grand girls and watching them grow. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of over 55 years, Janey Knesek Helmke; children, Keith (Deena), Brian (Carrie), and Kelley Reno (Sean); brother, Alfred Helmke, Jr. (Liz); grandchildren, Rebecca Helmke, Brianna Helmke, Hollie Helmke, Haley Reno, Emily Reno, and Kenley Reno; nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.

Funeral service was held on Friday, November 12, 2021 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South with internment at San Jose Burial Park.
